There are several options to export a car to Mexico, they are as follows:

Definitive export: The vehicle will exit the US in a permanent manner, you will be issued Mexican license plates, the car will be free to be used all over Mexico permanently, and to be sold in Mexico with no particular restrictions.

Classics: The vehicle will exit the US in a permanent manner, you will be issued Mexican license plates, the car will be free to be used all over Mexico permanently, and to be sold in Mexico with no particular restrictions. The car must be at least 30 years older than the year of the export.

Mexican borderline export: The vehicle will exit the US in a permanent manner, you will be issued special Mexican license plates, the car will be free to be used on the borderline zone (20 kilometers in parallel from the US-Mexico border) permanently, and to be sold on the same zone with no particular restrictions, the vehicle might need a special permit to pass the 20 kilometer limit of the borderline and that permit will not be permanent.

Temporal permit: The vehicle will be allowed to enter into Mexico on temporal bases, you will not lose your US license plates, you will be issued a paper permit that allows the vehicle to be driven into any part of Mexico for a fixed amount of time, after that the car need to return to the US.

Definitive export

To export a vehicle permanently you need to have into consideration only a few points:

1. The vehicle must be manufactured or assembled in Mexico, the US or Canada
2. The vehicle model (year) needs to be 8 or 9 years older than the year of the export
3. The vehicle must not be prohibited or restricted to circulate in the US

The exporting cost is only 10% of the vehicles cost (plus Mexican taxes)

To export a car you need to be a Mexican citizen, it does not matter where you live or if you have more than one nationality, you only need the following documents:

• Official Mexican ID
• CURP (Mexican unique population registry code)
• Vehicle title
• Certificate of emission

The Mexican costume agent will do this paperwork for you:

• Get a certificate that states that the car complies with conditions needed to be exported (gas emissions and physical conditions)
• Verify that the car is not reported as stolen
• Verify the car’s title
• Get the US government authorization to export the car
• Elaborate the motion to export the car
• Payment of the pertinent taxes

After that process the export is done, you only need to register your car on the Mexican REPUVE (Vehicular Public Registry) and obtain your license plates.

Mexican borderline export

Border zone

To export a vehicle permanently into the border line you need to have into consideration only a few points:

1. The vehicle must be manufactured or assembled in Mexico, the US or Canada
2. The vehicle model (year) needs to be from 5 to 10 years older than the year of the export
3. The vehicle must not be prohibited or restricted to circulate in the US
4. Any person can export up to one car every 12 months, for more it has to be registered as an importer

The exporting cost is only 1% of the vehicles cost (plus Mexican taxes) for cars from 5 to 9 years and 10% for cars 10 years old (plus Mexican taxes).

You can consult a list of all the contemplated Vehicles to transport persons and Vehicles to transport general gods directly from the Mexican Government web pages (on Spanish), in general all passenger cars can be exported and for the transport of gods vehicles of up to 26,000 pounds (11,793 [Kg]).

To export a car you need to be a Mexican citizen residing on the border zone, you only need the following documents:

• Official Mexican ID
• Document to prove that you reside on the border zone
• CURP (Mexican unique population registry code)
• Vehicle title
• Photograph of the cars VIN number

After that process the export is done, you only need to register your car on the Mexican REPUVE (Vehicular Public Registry) and obtain your license plates.

Temporal permit

These is only a permit to use your car in Mexico, these is not an export process, the paperwork is fast and simple but you cannot sell, give away or use your car for commercial use, you can get your permit online, on a Mexican Consulate (Chicago, Austin, Dallas, Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Sacramento, Albuquerque, Denver and Phoenix) or on the Mexican border.

It is highly recommended that you anticipate your paperwork as you might encounter long lines on the Mexican border; you can get your permit online from 10 to 60 days prior to your trip and up to 6 months before your trip on the mentioned Consulates.

The cost of the permit is as follows:

Pay permit online $45 US dollars plus Mexican taxes
On Consulates or the border $51 US dollars plus Mexican taxes

Also you have to consider a security deposit as follows:

Models 2007 and newer $400 US dollars
Models 2001-2006 $300 US dollars
Models 2000 or earlier $200 US dollars

You will be asked to sign an engagement letter saying that you will return your car to the US on the authorized term, remember to present your car on the Ciitev module of the Mexican border when you return to the US in order to get your receipt and your security deposit back.

If you need to change the dates that your car will be in Mexico, decide to bring a different car or if your car is sold, stolen, has an accident or others that prevent you from presenting the car you will have to report that on the Ciitev module of the Mexican border.

Remember that while your car is in Mexico the car can be driven by you, your spouse, parents, children and siblings even if they are not foreigners, the car can also be driven by all foreigners legally present on the country, temporal residents or any person in general if you travel with them.

Important note: On all cases the model year of a car is comprehended from the 1st of November of one year to the 31 of October of the next year.
